Sam painted this piece in honor of Alan Kulwicki's championship in 1992. Alan had received permission from the Ford Motor Company to change the word "Thunderbird" on the front spoiler, to "Underbird" in reference to his under dog status against the big teams.

Alan went on to win the 1992 championship by a mere 10 points over Bill Elliott in the Junior Johnson car. It was and still is the closest margin of victory in Winston Cup history.

I wanted to send this piece to Alan to ask for his autograph, but it was delivered to my house on April 1, 1993, the day that Alan died in a plane crash.

For those of you with sharp eyes, the car is shown doing the "Polish Victory Lap" that Alan made famous.

Check out the "Mighty Mouse" remarque in the lower margin.
